History
Our story begins with the original Spencer Building, completed in 1928. This early structure formed the foundation around which later development would grow.
In 1977, the Harbour Centre complex was constructed over and around the Spencer Building. Designed by WZMH Architects (the same firm that designed Toronto’s CN Tower), the new tower is equivalent to 40 stories and reflects the Brutalist/Modernist architectural style that was popular in Vancouver at the time. The Vancouver Lookout was officially opened by American astronaut Neil Armstrong on August 13, 1977, when it was the tallest building in the city.
Now the Vancouver Lookout ranks as the 8th-tallest building in Vancouver at 168 meters (553 feet). The observation deck continues to offer panoramic views of the city and region. The tower is fitted with LED colour-changing lights (2,390 W total) that are regularly illuminated for holidays, community events, and charitable campaigns.
