While Vancouver winters are typically mild and rainy, the city transforms into a winter wonderland when snow arrives. Better yet, you don’t have to venture far to enjoy authentic Canadian winter experiences—world-class ski mountains are just minutes from downtown.
Whether you’re visiting during a snowy winter or experiencing Vancouver’s more typical rain, here are the best winter activities to make the most of the season.
Hit the North Shore Mountains
Vancouver is renowned for its proximity to mountains, offering all kinds of winter activities. Cypress Mountain, Grouse Mountain, and Mount Seymour are located across from Vancouver on the North Shore, easily reached from downtown, and offer lessons, rentals, night skiing, and many other winter activities.
Cypress Mountain: Offers the highest vertical rise of the North Shore mountains and is most popular with locals. Amazing views and the greatest number of expert runs make it a favorite. Having hosted freestyle skiing and snowboarding events for the 2010 Winter Olympics, it also boasts five terrain parks. For cross-country enthusiasts, there are 19km of trails plus snowshoe trails.
Grouse Mountain: One of Vancouver’s biggest attractions, where the Skyride Gondola brings you to the top. Great skiing with amazing views, but if you prefer a more relaxed day, Grouse Mountain is perfect. Excellent dining, a theatre, snowshoeing, zip-lining, and even skating await at the Peak of Vancouver.
Mount Seymour: The eastern-most mountain, perhaps lesser known to tourists, but a great choice for families or beginners. It receives the most snowfall of the North Shore mountains and offers snowshoeing, tobogganing, and snow tubing.
Go Ice Skating
Unlike most of Canada, Vancouver winters rarely dip below freezing, making outdoor ice skating unusual. Robson Square Ice Rink, located next to the Vancouver Art Gallery and steps from Robson Street shopping, offers a perfect solution. Open from 9am to 9pm daily (11pm on Friday and Saturday), with free rink access and affordable skate rentals, skating at Robson Square is a Vancouver wintertime favorite.
For a more authentic Canadian experience of skating on a frozen pond, check the Vancouver Park Board website for updates. In rare cold winters, Trout Lake in East Vancouver may freeze over and open for public skating.

Catch a Hockey Game
Attending a hockey game is a true Canadian wintertime experience. The Vancouver Canucks, the local NHL team, play at Rogers Arena in downtown Vancouver. While the team has had varying seasons, attending a game guarantees an exciting evening filled with energy, passion, and authentic Canadian sports culture.
Check the Canucks schedule for upcoming games and experience why hockey is Canada’s most beloved sport.
